Brazil 4K Blu-ray Releases June 3 from Criterion
Criterion Collection presents Terry Gilliam’s Brazil with a new 4K restoration and extensive special features on Blu-ray.
Brazil, directed by Terry Gilliam, releases on 4K Blu-ray from Criterion on June 3, 2025. This edition features a new 4K restoration of Gilliam's director’s cut, supervised and approved by the director himself, ensuring the film’s dystopian vision is presented with exceptional clarity and fidelity. The movie's troubling narrative stars Jonathan Pryce as an ordinary man trapped in a nightmarish bureaucratic system, combining visionary visuals with dark satire.
The release includes a Dolby Vision/HDR presentation and a 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that complements Gilliam’s meticulous direction. Audio commentary by Gilliam offers insights into the film’s thematic complexity and production challenges. Additionally, the set contains Rob Hedden's on-set documentary What Is Brazil?, and The Production Notebook, a collection of interviews and video essays featuring rare materials from Gilliam’s personal archives.
A documentary titled The Battle of Brazil explores the film’s controversial release history, hosted by Jack Mathews and based on his book, while the Love Conquers All version—an alternate studio cut with a happier ending—is also included with commentary by Brazil expert David Morgan. Supplementary materials such as the trailer and English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing are also featured. Film critic David Sterritt’s essay provides additional critical context.
This release is scheduled to hit shelves on June 3, 2025, under the Criterion Collection label, recognized for its high-quality restorations and comprehensive supplements.
