Aguirre, the Wrath of God, directed by Werner Herzog, arrives on 4K Blu-ray from the British Film Institute on August 25. This 1972 epic - shot on location in the Amazonian jungle near Machu Picchu, is getting a big upgrade with it's new 4K restoration.
The film stars Klaus Kinski as Don Lope de Aguirre, a ruthless conquistador leading a doomed expedition in search of El Dorado, the mythical City of Gold. As they navigate cruel jungle conditions, Aguirre's delusions of grandeur intensify, culminating in a complete descent into madness

This edition features Dolby Vision HDR, an audio commentary with Werner Herzog, and a joint commentary with Herzog and actor-filmmaker Crispin Glover on the companion film Fata Morgana. Plus, Film historian Nic Wassell contributes a 19-minute featurette and a brief introduction from Mark Kermode.
Additional extras include Herzog’s early short films The Unprecedented Defence of the Fortress Deutschkreuz (1967), Last Words (1968), and Precautions Against Fanatics (1969), along with the 77-minute Fata Morgana (1971), the original theatrical trailer, and an image gallery. The release offers original mono audio in German and English, plus an alternative 5.1 surround German track.
The first pressing includes an illustrated booklet with new essays by Geoff Andrew and archival contributions by Laurie Johnson, Kim Heaney, and Richard Combs.
