Actors: Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore
PlotIn the San Fernando Valley, an intricate mosaic of lives intersect and collide on a fateful day. At the core is Earl Partridge, an elderly man on his deathbed yearning to reconcile with his estranged son, Frank Mackey, a charismatic yet vulgar motivational speaker who teaches men how to seduce women. Earl's young wife, Linda, buckling under the weight of guilt and impending loss, seeks to amend her past mistakes. Earl's devoted nurse, Phil Parma, is tasked with the near-impossible job of locating Frank to fulfill Earl's dying wish.
Meanwhile, the precocious child prodigy, Stanley Spector, grapples with the pressures of his exploitive father and the demands of a TV quiz show. His story tangentially connects to that of a former quiz show champ, Donnie Smith, who struggled with life after his childhood fame and is now seeking love and meaning in his existence. Elsewhere, an embittered police officer, Jim Kurring, is drawn into the convoluted web when he responds to a disturbance call that leads him to Claudia Wilson Gator, a woman with a troubled past and a cocaine habit that masks her deep-seated pain. Their encounter sets them both on a precarious path to redemption. Each individual's story is threaded with themes of chance, misfortune, and the search for connection in the chaos of life, all underscored by an impending natural phenomenon that will alter their lives forever.
