In a World...

Director: Lake Bell
Actors: Lake Bell, Fred Melamed, Michaela Watkins
PlotCarol Solomon is a struggling vocal coach who dreams of breaking into the male-dominated world of movie trailer voiceovers, a field that has long been dominated by her egotistical father, Sam Sotto. Carol's career takes a surprising turn when she unexpectedly lands a high-profile gig that puts her in direct competition with not only her father but also Gustav Warner, the industry's biggest star. As Carol navigates this new terrain, she faces both professional and personal challenges, including strained relationships within her dysfunctional family and the pressure to prove herself against the industry's dismissive attitude towards women.
Meanwhile, Sam's engagement to his much younger girlfriend exacerbates existing tensions in his family, causing rifts between him and his daughters. Carol's sister, Dani, grapples with her own set of marital issues, adding another layer of complexity to their familial dynamics. As Carol pushes forward with her ambitions, she also finds herself entangled in a budding romance with her sound engineer friend, Louis. Carol must confront her deepest insecurities and societal expectations in an industry resistant to change. The film balances comedy and drama to explore themes of identity, ambition, and familial loyalty as it follows Carol’s journey to find her own voice—in more ways than one.
