Colleen Lunsford, a young novice nun, receives an unexpected email from her estranged mother urging her to return home. Leaving behind the quiet solace of the convent, Colleen travels back to Asheville, North Carolina, where she is confronted by the chaotic remnants of her former goth lifestyle. Her family, especially her emotionally fragile mother, struggles with various personal issues, creating an uneasy homecoming for Colleen. Adding further difficulty is her brother Jacob, a disfigured Iraq war veteran who has retreated into reclusion, his trauma deeply affecting the entire family dynamic.
