Ebola Syndrome
Director: Herman Yau
Actors: Anthony Chau-Sang Wong, Yeung-Ming Wan, Fui-On Shing
PlotA Hong Kong restaurant employee, Kai, is a fugitive hiding in Johannesburg after committing a double murder and rape in his home city. His grotesque tendencies linger, and he secures employment at a Chinese restaurant in South Africa. His criminal nature prevails as he engages in illicit activities, even assaulting his employer's wife. Kai's life takes an unexpected turn when he and his boss go on a trip to a rural area of Africa to procure cheap meat for their business.
During their excursion, the pair unwittingly encounter a small village afflicted by the Ebola virus. In the process of acquiring the meat, Kai is exposed to the virus. Miraculously, he survives the infection but becomes a carrier of the deadly disease. Oblivious to the peril he poses, Kai returns to Johannesburg, where he continues his routine, indifferent to the pandemic risk he has now become part of. His immoral actions and the contamination he carries spiral out of control, threatening to ignite an epidemic that could cross continents. The tale captures the ignorance and indifference towards the Ebola threat in the mid-1990s, and the unpredictable dangers of human immorality intertwined with a deadly pathogen.
