Waves
Director: Trey Edward Shults
Actors: Taylor Russell, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Alexa Demie
PlotSet against the vibrant landscape of South Florida, the plot centers on the lives of an African-American suburban family led by a well-intentioned but domineering father. The family navigates love and forgiveness in the aftermath of a tragic loss. The father, Ronald, pushes his teenage son, Tyler, to excel in wrestling and succeed in life, imposing strict disciplinary measures that stem from a place of love but generate an intense pressure cooker environment at home. Tyler, while outwardly successful and popular, struggles internally with the high expectations and begins to unravel as the stress from an injury and personal relationships compounds his sense of isolation.
The narrative shifts to focus on Tyler's quiet and reserved younger sister, Emily, who lives in Tyler's shadow and grapples with her place within the family and her own identity. Emily's journey of self-discovery brings her closer to a compassionate and thoughtful teammate, Luke, who confronts his own family issues. Together they embark on a path of healing and understanding, exploring the complexities of their emotions, relationships, and the human capacity to empathize and connect in the face of hardship and pain. Through her perspective, the story examines the importance of compassion and the resilience of the human spirit.
