Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
Director: Elio Petri
Actors: Gian Maria Volontè, Florinda Bolkan, Gianni Santuccio
PlotIn the opening scenes, a high-ranking police inspector commits a shocking act: he murders his mistress. Demonstrating a perverse test of the system's integrity and his own untouchable status, he leaves behind a trail of unmistakable clues that should lead directly to him. This audacious act begins a twisted game of cat and mouse, where the inspector both leads and obstructs the investigation into the crime he himself committed. Surrounded by colleagues who are less competent or perhaps unwilfully blind to the evidence before them, he moves through the motions of solving the crime, all the while embedding himself deeper into the fabric of the case.
As the investigation unfolds, the film delves into the inspector's psyche, exploring his motivations and the corrupt underbelly of the political and social system he represents. His actions serve as a critique of the abuses of power by those who are supposed to uphold the law, showing how they can manipulate the system to their own ends. Meanwhile, the inspector's interactions with his colleagues and the people involved in the case reveal the complexities of authority, control, and the human desire for dominance. The deeper the investigation goes, the more apparent it becomes that the inspector's challenge to the system is not just a personal vendetta but a broader commentary on the state of societal and governmental corruption.
