Set against the backdrop of the Korean War in the early 1950s, the story follows Ensign Jesse Brown, the first African-American aviator to complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program. Brown is an exceptional pilot, but he faces the era's intense racial discrimination both inside and outside the military. Despite the challenges, his skill and determination earn him the respect of his peers and a place in the Fighter Squadron 32, known as the "Swordsmen." Brown forges a close bond with his wingman, Lieutenant (junior grade) Tom Hudner, an affable and courageous pilot.
