Marriage Story
Director: Noah Baumbach
Actors: Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Julia Greer
PlotA stage director and his actor wife face the grueling, bittersweet process of ending their marriage. Living in New York, they have enjoyed a seemingly fruitful partnership both on and off the stage. However, as their personal relationship deteriorates, they decide to separate. With a shared young son in the picture, what begins as an amiable separation with intentions of avoiding legal counsel eventually escalates. The wife moves to Los Angeles to pursue television acting opportunities, taking their son with her, which ignites the first of many coming complications regarding their bicoastal separation.
As they both navigate the choppy waters of their disintegrating union, they enlist the help of lawyers, despite their initial intent to keep things simple and civil. The husband finds himself drawn into a legal battle that begins to spiral with competing interests and escalating demands. Communication breaks down further as the hired attorneys amplify the conflict, using tactics that reflect the adversarial nature of divorce proceedings. Despite the couple’s underlying respect and love for each other, the reality of their separation brings out their worst fears and competitive instincts, threatening to undermine what they once cherished about their relationship.
