In 19th-century London, the renowned but morbid Dr. Bernard Hichcock is a respected physician who harbors a dark and disturbing obsession with necrophilia. He frequently administers an anesthetic to his wife, Margaret, to make her appear lifeless so he can fulfill his perverse desires. One day, he accidentally overdoses her, resulting in her death. Overcome with grief and guilt, Hichcock leaves London and seeks solace abroad. After several years, he returns to London with a new wife, Cynthia, hoping to start afresh in his old mansion.

Cynthia soon starts experiencing strange and unsettling occurrences within the house. She finds herself haunted by frightening visions and the inexplicable reappearance of Margaret's belongings.
