PlotIn 1950s New York, a young aspiring photographer named Therese Belivet works in a department store where she meets an elegant and sophisticated older woman named Carol Aird. Carol is in the midst of a difficult divorce and custody battle for her young daughter Rindy. The chance meeting sparks a connection between the two women, leading to an invitation for Therese to visit Carol's home.
