PlotDuring the final years of the Cultural Revolution in China, a man named Lu Yanshi is released from a labor camp and returns home to his wife, Feng Wanyu, and their teenage daughter, Dan Dan. Despite their years of separation and the incredible hardship they endured, Lu is desperate to reunite with his family and reclaim the life they once had. However, Lu discovers that Feng, who has deeply suffered psychologically from their separation and the turmoil of the era, doesn't recognize him due to a severe psychological trauma known as dissociative amnesia. As Lu attempts to reconnect with Feng and navigate through her memory loss, their relationship faces emotional challenges.
Meanwhile, their daughter Dan Dan, an aspiring ballet dancer whose dreams were thwarted by her family's political struggles, holds a complex mixture of anger and loyalty toward her parents. Her interactions with them reveal the generational impact of the Cultural Revolution on Chinese families. Confronted by Feng's fragmented reality and Dan Dan's internal conflicts, Lu endures an agonizing struggle to help Feng reclaim her identity and heal old wounds. The story poignantly explores themes of love, loss, and hope against the backdrop of a society deeply scarred by historical upheaval.
