The Florida Project
Director: Sean Baker
Actors: Brooklynn Prince, Bria Vinaite, Willem Dafoe
PlotSet in the shadow of Disney World, the film follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother Halley as they navigate life on the margins. Moonee spends her summer days exploring the area around their budget motel, The Magic Castle, getting into mischief with her friends Scooty and Jancey. Despite their precarious living situation, the children’s days are filled with a sense of adventure and freedom. Halley struggles to make ends meet through various schemes, occasionally clashing with Bobby, the stern but caring motel manager who watches over the children while doing his best to maintain order.
As Halley’s financial situation becomes increasingly desperate, her recklessness threatens to unravel the precarious world she and Moonee inhabit. Always aware of their vulnerability but masked by Moonee’s endless optimism, glimpses of the harsher aspects of their reality begin to surface. Halley's attempts to provide for her daughter grow more erratic, which catches the attention of both authorities and those around them. The unyielding bond between mother and daughter faces constant challenges as they strive for a semblance of stability amidst mounting adversity. Through tender and often poignant moments, the story captures their struggle to hold onto happiness despite looming uncertainties.
