PlotIn the quiet American town of Santa Rosa, California, young Charlie Newton feels life has become dull and predictable. Excitement brews when her mother receives a telegram that her brother-in-law, also named Charles but called Uncle Charlie, will be visiting them soon. The family, especially young Charlie who was named after him and considers her uncle her spiritual confidant, anticipates his arrival with joy. When Uncle Charlie arrives, he is greeted with affection and quickly becomes a beloved figure in the household, showcasing a charm that endears him to the Newtons. However, his presence brings not only a refreshing change but a sense of mystery as well. Young Charlie grows curious about his secretive behavior and the wads of cash he carries.
As Uncle Charlie settles into the family’s routine, young Charlie notices peculiarities in his actions and a haunting unease creeps into her once unquestioning admiration for him. When two gentlemen arrive in town claiming to be surveyors working on a national survey, they reveal themselves to be detectives to young Charlie. They suspect Uncle Charlie of being the “Merry Widow Murderer,” a criminal sought for the murder of wealthy widows across the East Coast. Torn between familial loyalty and a desperate search for the truth, young Charlie grapples with the mounting evidence that her once cherished uncle might be harboring a sinister secret, thrusting her into a chilling cat-and-mouse game that tests the limits of trust and deception.
