The Remains of the Day

Actors: Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, John Haycraft
PlotIn pre-WWII England, Mr. Stevens, a dedicated and fastidious butler, serves at Darlington Hall, a grand manor belonging to Lord Darlington. Resolute in maintaining a strict code of professionalism, Stevens is consumed by his duty and the need to manage the house and its staff with precision. Unwavering in his service to his employer, Stevens upholds the traditional values of the English aristocracy. Meanwhile, the world outside the manor is changing as Europe edges closer to war.
The arrival of Miss Kenton, a new housekeeper, introduces emotional complexity to Stevens' regimented life. Her vivacity and spirit stir feelings in Stevens, who remains stoic and committed to his role. The staff, including Stevens and Miss Kenton, observe Lord Darlington's involvement in international affairs with various dignitaries visiting the manor, which hints at the brewing political tensions of the time. Despite growing emotional undercurrents and external pressures, Stevens' loyalty to his employer and to his own sense of duty remains steadfast, shaping his actions and personal sacrifices.
