Actors: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Marcia Gay Harden
PlotIn the late 1920s, renowned illusionist Stanley Crawford, known on stage as Wei Ling Soo, is enlisted by his friend Howard Burkan to unmask a purported psychic named Sophie Baker. Sophie has been beguiling a wealthy American family on the French Riviera with her astonishing abilities, and Howard believes her to be a fraud. Skeptical and cynical, Stanley accepts the challenge and travels to the Côte d'Azur to expose Sophie. From his first encounter with her, Stanley finds himself baffled by Sophie's seemingly genuine powers. Despite his efforts to debunk her, each demonstration only heightens his confusion and fascination.
As he spends more time with Sophie, Stanley's rigid rationality begins to waver. He finds himself enchanted not only by her talents but also by her vibrant spirit and charm. The lush backdrop of the French Riviera and the friendly family members further envelop him in an atmosphere of warmth and intrigue. Yet, underlying Stanley’s growing admiration is his relentless pursuit to uncover the truth. As the line between illusion and reality blurs, Stanley faces an internal conflict that challenges his deep-seated beliefs about logic and magic.
