Winter in Wartime
Director: Martin Koolhoven
Actors: Martijn Lakemeier, Jamie Campbell Bower, Yorick van Wageningen
PlotIn the midst of World War II, a Dutch village is occupied by German forces. A young boy named Michiel is fiercely rebellious against the occupation, feeling constrained by his father's seemingly passive stance. As winter sets in, Michiel discovers an injured British airman named Jack hiding in the woods. Sworn to secrecy and driven by a sense of adventure and justice, Michiel decides to assist Jack, providing him with food, shelter, and medicine despite the immense risks involved. His acts of defiance inadvertently draw the attention of both the Nazis and his fellow villagers, some of whom are sympathetic to the German occupiers.
As Michiel delves deeper into the resistance efforts, he becomes entangled in a web of espionage, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. His relationships with his family and friends are strained as he navigates the treacherous terrain of war and loyalty. With the arrival of harsher conditions and increased German scrutiny, Michiel confronts the stark realities of heroism and survival, realizing that his actions have far-reaching consequences. The narrative builds a gripping tension as Michiel balances the innocence of youth with the grave responsibilities thrust upon him by the ravages of war.
