PlotPatricia Dombrowski, also known by her stage name Killa P and aspiring to be called Patti Cake$, is a plus-size white woman from a gritty New Jersey suburb who dreams of escaping her difficult life through superstardom in the world of rap. Facing economic hardship, a discouraging job at a local bar, and an ailing grandmother whose medical bills are piling up, Patti's life is far from glamorous. Her mother, a faded singer with a taste for drink, is not supportive, often critical of Patti’s aspirations, and serves as a stark reminder of what could happen if dreams don't materialize. Despite a cascade of rejections and the pervasive ridicule for her ambition, Patti remains steadfast in her pursuit to achieve her musical goals and prove her doubters wrong.
Teaming up with her best friend Jheri, who works at a pharmacy but has a passion for music, and a mysterious and reclusive musician named Basterd, the unlikely trio embarks on an quest to make a name for themselves in the music industry. Combining Patti's rhymes, Jheri's beats, and Basterd's anarchic sound, they form a group, fighting for respect and recognition. Patti's lyrical prowess and her unapologetic determination shine through in their grassroots approach to gaining a following, all while navigating the complexities of their personal lives and the harsh realities of their blue-collar environment.
