Thomas Anderson, known by his hacker alias "Neo," is living a seemingly normal life as a software developer by day while working as a hacker by night. Plagued by a persistent feeling that something is off with the world, his reality is upended when he receives mysterious messages leading him to the enigmatic Morpheus. Morpheus awakens Neo to a grim reality: humanity is trapped in a simulated, dystopic world known as the Matrix, constructed by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population while their bodies are harvested for energy.

Morpheus believes Neo is "The One," a prophesied individual who can manipulate the Matrix from within and free humankind from subjugation.
