In post-Civil War Wyoming, a blizzard forces eight strangers to seek shelter together in a remote stagecoach lodge called Minnie's Haberdashery. Among them are a bounty hunter known as John "The Hangman" Ruth, who is transporting fugitive Daisy Domergue to be hanged, and another bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren, who carries an infamous reputation and a stack of bodies to turn in for cash. They are joined by Chris Mannix, who claims to be the new sheriff of Red Rock, the town where Daisy is headed. The inhospitable weather and forced proximity heighten tensions among the group.

As the storm rages on outside, it becomes increasingly clear that some members of the group harbor hidden agendas and old grudges.
