PlotRoy Wallis is a con artist with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, making his life and work highly structured and controlled. Alongside his protégé and partner, Frank Mercer, they run small-time cons, avoiding anything that might attract too much attention. Roy's life is a series of rituals and routines, carefully designed to keep his mental health issues in check, but limiting his personal life significantly. His condition leads him to consume multiple medications, which he inadvertently runs out of, causing his world to begin spiraling out of control.
In a desperate attempt to stabilize his life, Roy contacts his psychiatrist for a prescription refill, only to discover that he needs to reach out to his teenaged daughter, Angela, whom he has never met due to his estranged relationship with his ex-wife. Angela's entry into Roy's life brings an unexpected zest and challenges, as she expresses an interest in learning about her father's unconventional occupation. The inclusion of Angela into Roy's carefully structured world initiates a chain of events that starts to unravel the fragile construct of lies and deceit he has built around him, leading him to reconsider his life choices and the impact of his profession on those he starts to care about.

Matchstick Men, a con film rich in character depth, cleverly plays with the art of deception, much like cinema itself.
