In mid-19th century New York, a shy and plain young woman, Catherine Sloper, lives under the oppressive control of her wealthy and overbearing father, Dr. Austin Sloper. Catherine's mother died giving birth to her, and Dr. Sloper has long since held her in low regard, considering Catherine lacking in charm and grace. Catherine's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets the handsome and charismatic Morris Townsend at a party.
