A mysterious and solitary gunfighter named Shane rides into a small Wyoming valley, hoping to leave his violent past behind. He is welcomed by the Starrett family, who are struggling to maintain their farm against the growing threat of a ruthless cattle baron, Rufus Ryker, who wants to push the homesteaders off their land. Shane becomes a farmhand for the Starretts, bonding with the family, especially young Joey who idolizes him.
