Lions for Lambs

Director: Robert Redford
Actors: Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford
PlotThe film interweaves three distinct but related stories revolving around the consequences of a military action in Afghanistan. In Washington, D.C., a charismatic Republican Senator, Jasper Irving, gives a private briefing to Janine Roth, a seasoned journalist. Irving presents a new comprehensive strategy that he believes will turn the tide in the ongoing War on Terror. Skeptical but intrigued, Roth probes the senator, seeking to uncover the true implications of this strategy. Their conversation explores the political machinations and spin behind war, as well as the media's role in shaping public perception.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Dr. Stephen Malley, a politically engaged professor at a California university, has a heart-to-heart conversation with one of his most promising students, Todd Hayes. Disillusioned by the perceived apathy and disengagement of the youth, Malley attempts to reignite Hayes' once formidable civic passion, as he admonishes him about his wasted potential and the importance of taking action and having convictions. Concurrently, the ideals Malley preaches are put to the ultimate test in Afghanistan, where two of his former students, Arian and Ernest, are involved in a perilous operation. Believing in their professor's call to make a difference, they find themselves at the sharp end of conflict, facing the harsh realities of war.

Lions for Lambs critiques apathy in political crises but its preachiness and bad timing hindered its impact.
