A black detective from Philadelphia, Virgil Tibbs, finds himself unwittingly embroiled in a murder investigation in the small town of Sparta, Mississippi, when he is arrested while waiting for a train. His presence and status as an African-American lead to immediate tension with the local police force, especially the town's sheriff, Bill Gillespie. Despite this, Virgil's expert skills in forensic science and homicide investigations become evident, forcing Gillespie to grudgingly accept his help on the case.
