A Most Violent Year
Director: J.C. Chandor
Actors: Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo
PlotIn the harsh winter of 1981, one of New York City's most statistically violent years, an ambitious immigrant strives to expand his business and capitalize on the American Dream. He owns a heating oil company and is on the verge of securing a significant investment that could elevate his enterprise to new heights. However, he faces numerous challenges, as the corruption and decay of the city threaten to engulf the clean, honorable empire he aims to build. Competing oil magnates, criminal gangs, and a relentless legal system stand in his way, challenging his ethics and entrepreneurial spirit.
Amidst the violence and disorder, the heating oil entrepreneur must navigate a path between legitimizing his business and succumbing to the brutality of the era. His wife, who comes from a mobster background, is more inclined to fight the criminality they face with its own medicine, creating tension as he insists on maintaining his principles. Meanwhile, the District Attorney scrutinizes the business for any possible infractions, putting additional pressure on the owner as he attempts to secure loans and make the crucial real estate investments needed to grow his empire. His determination is put to the test as he juggles the safety of his family, the loyalty of his employees, and the integrity of his business practices in the cauldron of a violent and unforgiving city.
