PlotIn the midst of the Great Depression, a young aspiring reporter named Kit Kittredge lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her family. Kit dreams of making a difference with her writing and harbors ambitions of becoming a renowned journalist. The Kittredge family, previously well-to-do, faces financial ruin as the Depression takes its toll, forcing them to take in boarders to make ends meet. Kit's father leaves the city to find work, while her mother and friends rally to keep their home open, turning it into a boarding house. Amid these changes, Kit befriends a diverse group of the house's lodgers, including magicians, dancers, and aviators, each bringing their own unique stories and lessons to the young girl's life.
As Kit navigates the challenges of her surroundings, a series of thefts in the community threatens the security of her home and the well-being of her new friends. Determined to prove her mettle as a journalist and uncover the truth, Kit embarks on a quest to find the culprits behind the burglaries, using her keen observation skills and unwavering determination. Her adventures lead her into unexpected encounters and alliances, including with hobos and her peers, revealing the strength of community and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs. Through her investigations, Kit not only seeks to save her family's home but also to give a voice to those who are often overlooked during trying times.
