The Other Side of Hope
Director: Aki Kaurismäki
Actors: Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Kaija Pakarinen
PlotIn Helsinki, a Syrian refugee named Khaled arrives by boat. After escaping a violent war in his home country, he navigates the bureaucratic labyrinth of the Finnish immigration system, seeking asylum. Denied refuge, Khaled evades deportation and finds himself living on the streets. Meanwhile, middle-aged salesman Wikström decides to reinvent himself by leaving his wife and job to purchase a decrepit restaurant, hoping for a fresh start. These two seemingly unconnected lives intersect when Wikström discovers Khaled sleeping in the courtyard of his restaurant.
Instead of turning Khaled in, Wikström offers him a job, integrating him into the motley crew running the eatery. As Khaled starts to rebuild his life with the help of these unexpected allies, he continues his desperate quest to locate his missing sister. The story explores themes of kindness, resilience, and the human spirit within the context of a migrant’s struggle in an unfamiliar land. Balancing moments of humor with deep empathy, the narrative sheds light on the importance of solidarity and compassion in the face of adversity.
