Actors: Chloë Sevigny, Kristen Stewart, Jeff Perry
PlotIn 1892, in the stifling atmosphere of Fall River, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden lives a life of quiet desperation. Trapped under the strict rule of her domineering father Andrew and the cold indifference of her stepmother, Abby, Lizzie's world is confined and lonely. Suffering from epileptic seizures, Lizzie faces not only physical challenges but also social ostracism. As a bright, unmarried woman nearing her thirties, she struggles to carve out a place for herself within the oppressive constraints of her family and society's expectations.
The arrival of a new maid, Bridget Sullivan, introduces a flicker of companionship and understanding into Lizzie's isolated life. Bridget, an Irish immigrant working to send money back to her impoverished family, endures daily indignities and is subjected to sexual abuse by Lizzie's father. As the two women form a bond over their shared vulnerabilities, a complex relationship begins to develop. Their burgeoning companionship provides Lizzie with a rare sense of solidarity and strength that empowers her to begin resisting the shackles of her oppressive environment.
