PlotDuring World War II, Veronika and Boris are young lovers living in Moscow. Their romance is abruptly interrupted when Boris volunteers for the front lines, leaving Veronika behind. She struggles with his absence, and her life becomes increasingly difficult as the war intensifies. Her family suffers a tragic loss when their home is destroyed in a bombing raid, forcing Veronika to move in with Boris's family, who initially harbor hope that Boris will return unscathed. However, the pressures of war and the uncertainty surrounding Boris's fate create tension within the household.
Boris’s cousin Mark, who is exempt from military service due to a medical condition, starts taking advantage of the chaotic environment and Veronika's vulnerability. Veronika’s resilience is constantly tested as she faces both the ravages of war and personal betrayals. Despite her deepening despair, she remains determined to find meaning and hold onto hope amidst the destruction surrounding her. The film poignantly captures her struggle for emotional survival while highlighting the devastating impacts of war on individuals and families.
