PlotApril Epner is a 39-year-old schoolteacher in New York, grappling with the ticking of her biological clock. Her world is turned upside down when her husband, Ben, abruptly leaves her, and she subsequently learns that her adoptive mother, Trudy, has died. Amidst this emotional turmoil, April's plans of starting her own family seem increasingly improbable. Just as she starts to process these life changes, an extroverted local talk show host, Bernice Graves, comes into her life claiming to be her biological mother. April is caught off-guard and skeptical, but curiosity leads her to start a tentative relationship with Bernice, which is as complex as it is revelatory.
Meanwhile, April finds herself developing feelings for Frank, the father of one of her students, who is dealing with his own set of emotional challenges. As April navigates this budding romance, she is also trying to reconcile the shocking truths Bernice reveals about her past. The challenges of forming a new relationship with Frank and understanding her connection to Bernice make April confront her deepest fears and desires about motherhood, identity, and love. Just when she feels she might be gaining some semblance of balance, unforeseen twists challenge her newfound understanding of what it means to find happiness.
