Compliance
Director: Craig Zobel
Actors: Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy
PlotIn a fast-food restaurant in a small town, the manager, Sandra, oversees a busy day filled with the usual frustrations and demands of the service industry. The mundanity is disrupted by a phone call from a man claiming to be Officer Daniels. He accuses a young female employee, Becky, of stealing money from a customer's purse, sparking a cascade of events. Citing police involvement, the caller convinces Sandra to isolate Becky in the back office, setting in motion an increasingly troubling chain of interrogations and tasks. Sandra, pressured by the supposed authority figure on the phone, willingly participates, compelled by her desire to comply with law enforcement.
Under the caller's guidance, Sandra and her staff become enmeshed in a series of morally dubious actions. The situation escalates as Sandra, convinced of the need to cooperate with the investigation, finds ways to justify the invasive and demeaning demands placed upon Becky. The caller's manipulative control tests the limits of obedience, drawing on the staff's readiness to follow orders under the cloak of authority. The incident reflects a deep-seated propensity for deference to perceived power, however irrational the commands become, creating a tense examination of human psychology and the dark potential for exploitation within the power structures of everyday life.
