5 Flights Up

Director: Richard Loncraine
Actors: Diane Keaton, Morgan Freeman, Cynthia Nixon
PlotRuth and Alex Carver, an elderly couple living in Brooklyn, have spent 40 years in their charming fifth-floor walk-up apartment. As they age, the stairs become a challenge, prompting their niece Lily to suggest selling the apartment. Over one long weekend, the couple hosts an open house for prospective buyers while reflecting on their years together. Simultaneously, the news covers a story about an alleged terrorist on the loose in Brooklyn, adding a layer of tension to the already stressful process.
As Ruth and Alex navigate the chaos of potential buyers and bidding wars, they grapple with their own memories tied to the apartment. Each room holds a piece of their shared history, from their early marriage days to their professional milestones—Ruth as a teacher and Alex as an artist. Eventually, they come to a decision about whether to sell their beloved home or stay put, weighing their emotional attachment against the practicality of moving to a more accessible living situation.
