Dog Day Afternoon
Director: Sidney Lumet
Actors: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Penelope Allen
PlotIn the sweltering heat of a Brooklyn summer, a man named Sonny, along with his friend Sal and another accomplice, attempts to rob a local bank. The heist, meant to be a quick in-and-out job, goes awry when the third man gets cold feet and leaves, and Sonny discovers that the bank's cash has already been picked up for deposit, leaving only a small amount of money. Their simple plan turns complicated, and they find themselves trapped inside with the bank employees, as the robbery becomes a hostage situation.
Outside, the police quickly arrive, and a media circus ensues, drawing crowds of onlookers and TV reporters, all captivated by the unfolding drama. As the situation escalates, Sonny emerges from the bank to address the police, becoming an unexpected folk hero to the gathering bystanders. Inside, he attempts to negotiate with the authorities while also managing the growing fears and concerns of the hostages. Connections between the robbers and their captives begin to form as they spend long, tense hours together, while the police work to resolve the standoff with as little violence as possible.
