The Awful Truth

Director: Leo McCarey
Actors: Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Ralph Bellamy
PlotJerry and Lucy Warriner are a wealthy couple whose marriage is strained by mutual distrust and misunderstandings. Jerry returns from a vacation that he claimed was in Florida but wasn’t, while Lucy arrives home after spending time with her music teacher, Armand. The couple suspects each other of infidelity, leading them to file for divorce. They agree to a 90-day period before the divorce becomes final, during which they both embark on new relationships.
As the days progress, both Jerry and Lucy experience a series of comedic and awkward situations involving their new suitors—Lucy becomes romantically involved with a wealthy but naïve oilman named Dan Leeson, who adores her innocence and sophistication. Meanwhile, Jerry attempts to win the affections of the haughty socialite Barbara Vance. Despite their efforts to move on, humorous mishaps and their undeniable chemistry make it clear that they may not be ready to end their marriage just yet.
