The Hunter
Director: Daniel Nettheim
Actors: Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Morgan Davies
PlotA mercenary named Martin, a skilled and solitary hunter, is sent by a biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness with a mission to find the last surviving Tasmanian tiger, believed to be extinct. His employer wants the tiger's genetic material for potential profit. Disguised as a scientist, Martin sets up base in a remote town and stays with a family whose father has recently gone missing in the wilderness, leaving behind a grieving wife, Lucy, and two children, Sass and Bike. Lucy is in a state of near-catatonic despair and isn't caring for her two precocious children, who become increasingly curious about Martin's secretive endeavors.
As Martin embarks on his systematic hunts into the dense forest, he begins to bond with Sass and Bike, who are struggling with the disappearance of their father. The harshness of the wilderness and the challenges of the hunt contrast with the slow restoration of family life back at the house. As the days pass, Martin's quest reveals traces of the elusive tiger, but he also uncovers the darker side of the local community. Hunters and loggers with vested interests cast a threatening shadow over his mission, and Martin is forced to navigate not only the treacherous wilderness but also the enigmatic human relationships that become increasingly entangled with his own hidden agenda.
