Adopt a Highway
Director: Logan Marshall-Green
Actors: Ethan Hawke, Christopher Heyerdahl, Chris Sullivan
PlotAn ex-convict, trying to adjust to life on the outside after serving 20 years for a minor offense due to the three-strikes law, discovers a baby left in a dumpster behind the fast-food restaurant where he works. Despite his precarious financial situation and the struggle to reintegrate into society, he sees the infant's discovery as a sign and an opportunity to do something meaningful. Deciding against notifying the authorities, he takes it upon himself to care for the baby, seeing in her a chance for redemption and a new start. The act ignites a transformation in him as he navigates the unexpected challenges of parenthood, rediscovering hope and a sense of purpose.
As he becomes attached to the baby, he learns to balance the responsibilities of caring for her with the complexities of his life, including dealing with his past, securing a stable job, and finding a place for them to live. The situation compels him to confront his own feelings of unworthiness and the societal judgments of ex-convicts. Through this journey, the experience of caring for the child challenges his perceptions of himself and the world around him, pushing him towards personal growth and an understanding of what it truly means to be responsible for another life.
