A hardened prisoner named Frank Morris, with a history of escape attempts, is transferred to Alcatraz, an island fortress-prison claimed to be escape-proof. Intelligent and resourceful, Morris quickly realizes the immense challenges of his new confines but observes the rigid routines and exploitable weaknesses of the prison. His arrival catches the attention of the strict warden, who takes a special interest in him due to his escape record. Morris makes allies with a few fellow inmates, including the eccentric Doc and the tough but loyal brothers Clarence and John Anglin.
