Nanny
Director: Nikyatu Jusu
Actors: Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls
PlotAisha, an undocumented Senegalese immigrant, secures a job in New York City as a nanny for the wealthy and seemingly perfect family of Amy and Adam. Leaving behind her own son, Lamine, in Senegal, Aisha's primary goal is to earn enough money to bring him to the United States. As she navigates her new role, she faces the challenges of adapting to a vastly different culture and the complexities of her employers' family dynamics. Amy, a busy and often absent mother, leaves Aisha with most of the parenting responsibilities for their daughter, Rose. Meanwhile, Adam's interaction with Aisha ranges from indifferent to subtly inappropriate, adding another layer of discomfort to her job.
As Aisha grows closer to the couple's daughter, she begins to experience unsettling supernatural occurrences in their upscale Manhattan apartment. These events are intertwined with Aisha's longing for her son and the sacrifices she has made for a better future. Her encounters with the supernatural are rooted in West African folklore, reflecting her cultural heritage and the emotional turmoil of her separation from her son. These disturbances start to impact Aisha's mental state, blurring the lines between reality and nightmarish visions, and challenge her sense of identity and belonging. As she delves deeper into her own fears and desires, the spirits haunting her seem to carry a message or a warning, tying her personal struggle with cultural dislocation and the immigrant experience.
