Dr. Alan Grant, having survived the disastrous Jurassic Park incident, continues his research on dinosaurs while steadfastly maintaining his distance from the islands where the creatures now roam free. Despite his previous experiences, the lure of paleontology keeps him fixated on the prehistoric beasts. His research, however, is underfunded, and his career is floundering. Desperate for financial support, he reluctantly agrees to a seemingly innocent, aerial tour of Isla Sorna, the second island with dinosaurs, when a wealthy couple, Paul and Amanda Kirby, approach him with a proposition. They claim to be thrill-seeking enthusiasts who are eager to see Isla Sorna from the sky, and they offer Grant substantial funding for his research in exchange for his guidance.

Once airborne, the kirbys, along with Dr. Grant and a small party of adventurers, including the Kirbys' friend and a trio of mercenaries, fly over Isla Sorna. Things quickly go awry when the group makes an unexpected and forcible landing on the dinosaur-infested island. Grant discovers that the Kirbys have misled him about the true nature of the expedition—it is not a tour, but a rescue mission to find their son, who went missing on the island. Stranded, the team must navigate through dangerous terrain, evading various predatory dinosaurs while searching for the Kirbys' son. The group's survival skills are put to the test as they encounter a host of new and terrifying dinosaur species, far more dangerous than anything Alan Grant has faced before.
