Is Anybody There?

Director: John Crowley
Actors: Michael Caine, Bill Milner, Anne-Marie Duff
PlotIn late 1980s England, a young boy named Edward lives in a seaside retirement home run by his parents. Curious about death and the afterlife, Edward obsessively records the residents' last moments on a tape recorder, hoping to catch evidence of ghosts. This morbid hobby is fueled by his feelings of isolation and his strained relationship with his parents, who are preoccupied with the daily stresses of managing the home.
The arrival of Clarence, an elderly magician grappling with the loss of his wife and his sense of purpose, marks a significant change in Edward's life. Initially reluctant to engage with anyone, Clarence eventually forms an unexpected friendship with Edward. Through their interactions, both characters embark on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, navigating grief, loss, and the hope for something more beyond their immediate circumstances. The bond they form becomes a catalyst for change, offering them both a glimmer of understanding and redemption.

A tender film with honest acting from Michael Caine, strong audio/video presentation, and divisive appeal—ideal for a rental before purchase.
