A family of seven, the Crains, move into Hill House, an old mansion that they intend to renovate and sell, adopting it as both a business venture and a temporary home. The parents, Hugh and Olivia, along with their five children, Steven, Shirley, Theodora, and twins Nell and Luke, begin to experience strange occurrences soon after they arrive. These range from unexplained noises and chilling cold spots to ghostly apparitions that seem to haunt the sprawling estate. As the supernatural events intensify, they particularly affect the sensitive mother, Olivia, and the youngest siblings, Nell and Luke, who form a special connection with the house.
