My Ultimate '85 Physical Media Checklist
A Month-by-Month Journey Through My Favourite Films of 1985

Monsters, mayhem, and misfits—twelve handpicked classics that sum up a legendary year in cinema.
Top of the morning to you all! Sean here from The Film Utopia Podcast again. On our recent and ongoing Year in Film series, we stuck with our mutually beloved 1980s to talk about our highlights from the year 1985. An impressive year for cinema goers, jam-packed with titles that would go on to become revered classics right up to today and beyond!
For this accompanying article, I decided to pick a personal favourite film from each month of 1985 and detail a favourite modern-ish day physical media release that I either own, or can’t wait to own! For certain months that had multiple incredible releases (and believe me, there are several), I will even include a few extra picks.
Important note: the choices within this article won’t always reflect the opinions of my esteemed co-hosts, Steven and Benjamin (although, in some cases they do), so if you’d like to hear us all debate the particulars of each month of 1985 in cinema, please do check out our episode here. Now, without further ado, let’s get cracking!
JANUARY
Phenomena, Arrow Video, UK, 4K UHD (2022)

Jennifer Connelly stars in Dario Argento’s Phenomena—now more breathtaking than ever thanks to Arrow’s 4K restoration
Phenomena: The Evolution of a Cult Classic with Arrow
Arrow’s Long-Standing Love Affair with Argento’s Supernatural Thriller
Arrow have released Dario Argento’s surreal, psycho-supernatural-horror-thriller, Phenomena, multiple times over the years, starting in 2011 with their classic windowed sleeve design. Arrow delivered subsequent re-releases in 2012 and 2014 as well as a Zavvi exclusive Steelbook here in the UK, before endowing us with a new, stunningly remastered 4K restoration of the full-length 116-minute Italian cut, and released in both a Limited Edition and Standard Edition in 2018.
Phenomena Hits a New High with Arrow’s 2022 4K UHD
Dolby Vision and Bold Colour: Argento’s Cinematic Vision Gets It's Ultimate Showcase
Arrow’s updated 4K UHD release in 2022 retains that remaster, but throws HDR10 compatible Dolby Vision into the mix for an absolutely jaw-dropping visual presentation of Argento’s signature colour-bold cinematography. It’s a must-have for Argento completionists, and a strong continuation of Argento’s legacy in the Arrow Video catalogue.
Runner up: The Mutilator, Arrow Video, HD (2016)

February
The Breakfast Club, The Criterion Collection, UK/USA, HD (2023)
A Release that Matches the Legacy
A Gorgeous 4K Restoration Bursting with Extras and Classic Artwork
It won’t come as a surprise to those in the know that of all the releases of John Hughes’ classic coming-of-age teen drama, this wonderful Criterion Collection disc is easily the most definitive. Par for the course, Criterion deliver the goods with and exhaustive list of extras, not limited to; artwork featuring one of the original theatrical posters from Annie Leibovitz, 50 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, most of the legacy extras from 2008 and the 30th anniversary release in 2015 as well as a gorgeous 4K restoration.

The Surround Sound Advantage
Immersion Elevated by an Impressive Alternate 5.1 DTS-HD Audio Track
But it’s the alternate 5.1 DTS-HD audio track that really takes the cake here. Single-location set films with a quality surround sound mix are always impressive as we have ample time to visually familiarize ourselves with the environment, and the accompanying surround mix only adds to immersion.
MARCH
Mask (Directors Cut), Final Cut Entertainment, UK, HD (2018)

Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask, starring Cher and Eric Stoltz—an emotional powerhouse that’s long overdue a remaster
Waiting for Justice: Where’s our Deluxe Release?
An Award-Winning Favourite Surprisingly Overlooked by Collectors’ Labels
The first of my this film is in dire need of an upgraded physical release complaints list! It’s surprising to me that this well loved, award winning Universal Pictures film hasn’t been given the loving physical release treatment that it deserves, but here we are!
A Classic Left in Limbo
Bogdanovich’s Powerful Drama Deserves More Than a Single Decent Disc
Peter Bogdanovich’s tear-jerking biographical drama starring Eric Stoltz, Cher, and Sam Elliot has been left hanging with the UK’s Final Cut Entertainment release of the director’s cut since 2018. To date, there has been no dedicated USA HD release for the beloved classic, although this disc will work on region A players. As for UHD? So far; nada! However, Final Cut’s disc is fine and features a very respectable 5.1 DTS-HD audio mix and an interesting, if brief, featurette with the director. A remaster of Mask would be very welcome!

APRIL
The Company of Wolves, Shout Factory, USA, 4K UHD (2022)
A True 4K Resurrection for Neil Jordan’s Gothic Classic
Shout Factory Delivers the Upgrade Fans Have Been Howling For
Shout Factory finally provided us with a sorely needed 4K upgrade to Neil Jordan’s gothic, lycan-tastic fantasy-horror in 2022. Prior to this release, the UK’s ITV Blu-ray release featured one of the worst visual quality discs in living memory that was no doubt lifted from the DVD and slapped onto the BD-25 disc that housed it along with sod-all in the way of extras, save for a director’s commentary.

Shout Factory Delivers a Pristine, Grain Intact Scan
Gorgeous Visuals Meet a Rich Suite of Extras
The Shout Factory/Scream Factory release delivers a terrific new 4K scan of the original camera negative with HDR10 compatible Dolby Vision that highlights the film’s atmosphere and rich fairytale lighting and colour palette, complete with all with the grain left intact! Chefs kiss! I’d love a remastered audio track, but the provided 2.0 DTS-HD mix is more than sufficient. A welcome selection of extra cast & crew interviews – including one with score Composer, George Fenton, plus a new commentary with Producer, Chris Brown, and Actors, Micha Bergese and Kathryn Pogson seal the deal.

MAY
Rambo: First Blood Part II, StudioCanal, UK/EU, 4K UHD (2018)
Rambo: Looking Sharp in Both HD and 4K
Top-Tier Action, Whatever Format You Choose
While I’m still rocking StudioCanal’s HD disc of Rambo: First Blood Part II, released the same year as its UHD counterpart, I have it on good authority that the 4K UHD release is a more-than competent presentation for this early addition to the format. Nevertheless, both the HD Blu-ray and 4K UHD are sourced from the same rescan and I can confirm that I’m perfectly happy with my HD disc, but trust the source of the info regarding the 4K.

Visuals Make a Leap, but Audio Leaves Room for Improvement
While the 4K upgrade wows visually, the 5.1 mix lacks depth and impact
Picture-wise, it is certainly a massive upgrade from the 2008 Special Edition region B HD Blu-ray! However, the sound could do with some work, in my opinion. The 5.1 DTS-HD surround mix rarely makes use of rear-left and rear-right, nor does it take enough advantage of the sub, which is a great shame given how many bullets are fired off and how much stuff blows up in this film. The silver lining is that despite a front-heavy mix, the dialogue is consistently present and clear, even among all the chaotic action.
JUNE
Return to Oz 30th Anniversary Edition, Disney Movie Club Exclusive / Buena Vista, USA, HD (2015)

Dorothy, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik-Tok and friends in Disney’s Return to Oz—a charming fantasy classic.
The Summer of '85, Hits after Hits
The Season That Defined a Cinematic Year—But Where’s the Oz Love, Disney?
As the summer months of 1985 rolled in, so too began the cinema releases that would go on to define 1985. And with June’s films including The Goonies, Pale Rider and Cocoon, where do you start with picking a great original cinema release/modern day physical media release combo? Well, in my opinion, you start with: “Disney, can you please give us a wide release, updated disc of one of my favourite 1980s fantasy films; Return to Oz? I know you won’t, but could you? Please? Thanks, mate!”
The End of the Line for Disney Discs
Physical Media Takes a Hit as Disney Puts All the Chips on Digital
It’s insane to think that a company as huge as Disney, with a multi-generational fanbase of completionist collectors, have hedged all of their bets on a fledgling streaming service and collapsed their physical distribution arm, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, in the process, with all physical Disney releases now handled by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. And all this after decades of limiting physical releases of highly sought-after titles to Movie Club subscribers, and historically staggering release dates in order to accumulate hype.
A Kingdom of Fantasy, Priced Like Gold
Return to Oz: A Rare Find for the Dedicated Collector
The result is that if you’d like to own this unremarkable, USA-only Return to Oz Blu-ray, you can expect to pay somewhere in the region of £230 on the second-hand market! The disc itself has been reviewed as ‘average’ in picture and sound quality, and comes bereft of extras. But don’t worry, all is not lost! if you want the disappointing follow-up; ‘Oz the Great And Powerful’ from 2018 on Blu-ray, you can find that everywhere!
Runner ups: I’d be remise not to highlight two excellent present day physical media releases of movies from June, 1985 here. Firstly, The Stuff on HD Blu-ray from Arrow Video UK (2017), and the recent gorgeous release of D.A.R.Y.L. on 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome, USA

JULY
Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy, Universal Studios, UK/Int, 4K UHD (2020)
Great Scott! The UK Finally Gets Back to the Future in 4K
At Long Last, British Fans Get Their Hands on Universal’s Shiny UHD Trilogy
While our friends in the USA have enjoyed this 4K UHD update of the outstanding Back to the Future trilogy by Universal Studios since June of last year, over here in the UK we’ve had to patiently wait until around the time you’ll be reading this this; mid April 2025. It’s a no-brainer purchase that I am eagerly awaiting delivery of.

A Release That Ticks Every Box
Stunning Visuals, a Dream Audio Track and Bonus Features Like It’s 2007 Again.
A quick scan of the specs and reviews from the trilogies USA release reveal a swath of discs chock-full of extras, and purportedly, an incredible visual experience with Dolby Vision HDR10+. But what excites me most is the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround soundtrack, the promise of which makes me as giddy as a kid at Christmas.
Runner up: I could write an entire article on the various physical releases of George Romero's Day of the Dead, and why finding the right combo of good picture, good sound (read: ‘the correct bloody audio track!’) and good extras, but common consensus suggests Arrow Video’s 3-disc HD Blu-ray second attempt from 2012 for the comprehensive extras, and Scream Factory’s 2013 HD Blu-ray for the picture.
Personally, I think Day of the Dead: Ultimate Edition (2018) from Australia’s Umbrella Entertainment is the cream of the crop as it contains both the original mono audio track and the 5.1 mix, both without the infamous censored out swearing and a selection of extras from the original Anchor Bay Blu-ray, the Scream Factory Blu-ray and both the 2011 and 2012 Arrow Video Blu-rays.

AUGUST
Fright Night, Eureka Classics, UK, HD (2017)
An Almost Impossible Pick
A Seriously Good Month for Physical Media.
Not the easiest choice I’ve ever made, given that Dan O’Bannon’s Return of the Living Dead, John Hughes’ Weird Science and Paul Verhoeven’s Flesh + Blood were all released in August 1985, and all have stellar modern-day physical releases in their own right!

A Horror Fan’s Dream Disc
Sharp 4K, Stacked Features, and Immersive Sound from Eureka
But I’m very fond of Eureka’s disc of Tom Holland’s excellent Fright Night, originally released in 2017, and again in 2018 as a Limited Edition. The 4K restoration is a sight to behold and is supported with both the original stereo PCM soundtrack, and a new 5.1 DTS-HD mix. The disc is also bulging at the seams with extras and the cover artwork is magnificent.
Runner ups:
- Return of the Living Dead (Limited Special Edition), Second Sight Films, UK, HD (2012)
- Weird Science, Arrow Video, UK, 4K UHD (2025)
- Flesh + Blood, Eureka Classics, UK, HD (2018).

SEPTEMBER
Invasion U.S.A., Vinegar Syndrome, USA, 4K UHD (2024)
Chuck Norris Takes 1985—And Vinegar Syndrome Brings Him Home in Style
The Definitive Norris Flick Gets a Knockout 4K Release
With perpetual living meme Chuck Norris starring in three movies throughout 1985, it’d be silly not to include one of them here. Fortunately, last year, the brilliant Vinegar Syndrome chose to bestow on us an incredible presentation of what I consider to be the quintessential Chuck Norris caper.

Vinegar Syndrome’s Knockout Chuck Norris Restoration
4K UHD, HDR10, and Surround Sound—This ’80s Action Classic Finally Gets Its Due
Shout Factory released a pretty solid disc back in 2016, but Vinegar Syndrome have pulled out all the stops here with a newly scanned restoration that just looks downright incredible. It even has HDR10! Imagine that. A 1980s cult action film with Chuck Norris, on 4K UHD with HDR and a 5.1 surround sound mix. What a time to be alive!
OCTOBER
Re-Animator, Second Sight Films, UK, HD (2016)

Jeffrey Combs stars as the infamous Herbert West in Re-Animator—an essential shot of cult cinema, sealed in crisp HD
All Hail Arrow’s Slipcover, But Let’s Hear It for Second Sight
While Arrow Dropped a Jaw-Dropping US Blu-ray, Second Sight Flies the Flag for UK Collectors
Yes, yes. I know! Arrow Video released a Special Edition HD Blu-ray in 2018 for USA customers only, with one of the most incredible slipcover artwork jobs ever known to mankind. But I wanted to show some love to another of my native country’s outstanding boutique outfits: Second Sight Films.
Second Sight Gives Re-Animator the Ultimate UK Upgrade
A Fresh 4K Restoration and the Integral Cut—The Definitive Experience in One Package
This was an early release for them, and they provided us with not only an at the time new 4K restoration of the film we’d all seen before, but also a newly restored version of the longer Integral Cut, that adds the Dr. Carl Hill clairvoyance b-plot back into the film along with some gore shots missing from the R-rated/18 version, complete on the same disc. The Integral Cut had previously surfaced on a German disc in 2013. However, this is still the most definitive physical release of Re-Animator available to us UK collectors.
NOVEMBER
Rocky IV, Warner Bros, UK/Int, 4K UHD (2023)

Rocky IV - Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago go head-to-head in one of cinema’s most legendary showdowns
Warner's 4K UHD Turns Every Drop of Sweat Into Cinema Gold
Pristine Picture, Powerhouse Sound — A Total Knockout
Re-released more times, and on more formats than I’ve had hot dinners, the recent 4K UHD of the fourth entry of Sylvester Stallone’s vehicle for muscle and sweat porn – no, not that one, the other one – Rocky IV on 4K is a force to be reckoned with. As I was introducing that last sentence, I had sweat on the mind as I don’t think I’ve ever seen sweat droplets flying all over the place in as crystal clear fidelity as is on display here. It’s bloody marvellous. As is the remastered DTS-HD 5.1 mix, which is one of the most spacious surround mixes I’ve ever heard on a physical media release.
DECEMBER
Brazil, The Criterion Collection, USA, 4K UHD (2025)

Katherine Helmond's character undergoes Jim Broadbent’s wild procedures in Brazil
Brazil Gets the Criterion VIP Treatment—And We're Counting Down the Days
Gilliam’s Dystopian Opus Returns in 4K, Fully Restored — No 27B/6 Form Needed to Own It
The recently announced Criterion Collection treatment of Terry Gilliam’s complete and utter masterpiece that is Brazil is another up-coming release that has me pacing the room like an anxious, soon-to-be father at 3am in the halls of a maternity ward. The disc, which is due out in June of this year, promises a new 4K restoration of the 143-minute Director’s Cut, complete with Dolby Vision HDR, supervised and approved by Gilliam himself, as well as a plethora of extras.
An Upgrade for Brazil, But the Fox Steelbook Gets a Well-Earned Display
Upgrading the Disc, Keeping the Art, and Expecting Criterion Greatness
For my collection, it will serve as an upgrade to my 20th Century Fox Steelbook from 2014, which although I will retire from spinning in the deck, I will be keeping because of the beautiful case. If Criterion’s release of Gilliam’s other works so far are anything to go by, I am expecting great things indeed!
